In a recent sale on Gilt I was able to order several different pairs of gloves from Portolano, an old Italian company that produces them for private labels and designers. While they’re not the best ones I have seen, I’m impressed with the quality and the leathers are much nicer than those used for the typical cheap gloves found in stores these days. The stitching appears to be all done by machine, and there are no discernible differences between gloves made in their Italian factory and the one in the Philippines.
Now I kind of want a pair of these gold colored gloves at Blackbird.

J.Crew has just updated its website with new items for spring, and I’m sure more will be showing up soon. Along with some of the great looking shirts and pants, there are also new Quoddy ring boots, a distressed Mister Freedom military webbing belt, and another Superior Labor tote.
The tote, which I just ordered, was something that I had been waiting on after seeing it on Secret Forts months ago – the original model name on the Japanese sites is called “Tote Bag of the Man” and you can see more of it on Utility CoOp. I’ve been very happy with my 2way Engineer Bag, so I have high hopes for this one as well.
Expect more pictures and a review once it arrives!

Gfeller Casemakers is a small company based out of Idaho that specializes in making leather goods for scientists who are frequently out in the field and I’m a big fan of their belt cases and utility tote. See more of their products here: http://www.gfellercasemakers.com/geoscience.html
Some of the gents on StyleForum and AAAC were recently invited to the Allen Edmonds factory in Port Washington, Wisconsin and posted pictures for viewing here.
While many of their recent models look questionable, Allen Edmonds definitely makes a good shoe and I will have to give consideration this next year to some those new boots and the calfskin ‘MacNeil’ longwings.
Over the weekend, it was reported that up to 300,000 people in England came out to support the Boxing Day fox hunts which is now seen as an important tradition. Controversies aside, the sport is largely about the community, the thrill of riding horses around in the field all day, and having a few drinks along the way. Not a bad way to spend a cold winter day really.
The January 2010 edition of Free & Easy is out in stores now and they’ve started the year off with an issue devoted to all things tweed, even going as far as to cover different breeds of sheep and regions where wools originate from. Great stuff if you’re a fabric nerd. Also be sure to check out the extra section called Merry Xmas, Mr. Leather.
The guys at Engineered Garments have delivered an early Christmas gift in the form of the lookbook for their Spring Summer 2010 collection and is available online now.
