From an older edition of Esquire’s Black Book.
While its design is rooted in hunting, the Upland jacket is fairly versatile enough to wear appropriately in other casual situations and in most cases can be treated like a regular sportcoat if done with care. One of my more favorite combinations for this time of year with my grey wool version is to pair it up with a fair isle or black v-neck sweater and tie.
I’m hoping that this next year will bring more cotton twill versions in both black and navy for Spring.
New on RalphLauren.com. Take your pick: white silk, black velvet, and black watch tartan.
The temperatures have finally dropped and today was the first day of the season that I pulled out my heavy knit belted cardigan.
Like the traditional smoking jacket, you should stick to wearing these around the house or cabin only – and as a bonus they’re also nice to have on hand just in case your girlfriend or wife needs something to warm up in.
I never paid much attention to this brand until Free & Easy published an article on its history in the last November issue. If I’m understanding this correctly, the company itself once existed in Montana, but closed down long ago – later, a Japanese company called 35summers then picked up the rights to it and recently started to create exact reproductions.
Some of the originals that were made can fetch high prices on the auction market, and 35summers probably saw a good opportunity to own the name itself. (Apparently they’re even popular enough that fakes are being produced, so buyer beware if you’re not purchasing them from a legit source.)

I refuse to buy the RRL replicas, so hopefully some stores in North America will pick these up soon. See more pictures of the FW2009 collection here: Link
