Engineered Garments – Online Stores

Looking for a store that sells Engineered Garments online in the U.S.? There are not many: Odin, Barney’s, and Hejfina (which just got in their first shipment).

The reason why the list is so small is that stores that signed up with the line after the SS2007 season are not allowed to sell directly online. As a customer, I sometimes get a bit frustrated over this policy as it makes it more difficult to track down or purchase certain pieces but I can understand their standpoint in trying to limit this.

A few retailers do try to sneak by this issue by selling through other means (sorry, not naming them here), and of course Yoox will occasionally get in a few items from past seasons. The other and more expensive alternatives are to go through ordering from Japan or one of the European stockists like Oi Polloi or The Bureau.

Save My Eyes

The two on the left are Persols, the upper right are the Selima Rivington’s for J.Crew, and the lower right pair are Ray-Bans from a year or two back. After using the first three frequently over the past several months, I feel I can honestly say that the lenses in Ray-Bans definitely do suck. They’ll probably be retired next year to be replaced with a pair from Randolph’s Engineering.

Hydroplane Boats

The hydroplane boats are the second coolest thing about Seafair after the Blue Angels (if not counting beer and women). The engines in particular are of interest to me, as they’re typically sourced from airplanes. Images from flickr.

Friday, July 31: 1:30-2:30 p.m. (Practice Flight)

Yuketen Ranger Moccasins

My ranger mocs from Yuketen have so far been treating me well after a couple months of wear, and they’re much more comfortable than the J.Crew desert boots that I rotate between.

Yuketen Ranger Moccasins

They definitely know how to make a good crepe soled shoe.  On mention of which, the little bird on twitter told me Oi Polloi will be putting up some of these boots for sale on their site on Friday.  They’ll probably go quick…

Update: Filson x Apolis Activism Briefcase Preorders

I believe that both Context and Farinelli’s have sold all of their preorders for the special Filson x Apolis Activism briefcase, but it looks like you might still have a chance to get one straight from the source: http://www.apolisactivism.com/?event=startPreorder

Context also has some great interviews on their site concerning the work and ideas behind the bag: http://www.contextclothing.com/eye_to_eye.php

Update 2: For the Canadians, Roden Gray is taking preorders as well.

Brooklyn Gang

The book is not easily available, but I found that you can check out some of the pictures taken by Bruce Davidson of a young group of kids in the 1950’s on magnumphoto.com.

Bruce Davidson Brooklyn Gangs

From wikipedia:

Bruce Davidson’s 1959 project Brooklyn Gang is an intimate photographic study of a rebellious Brooklyn teenage gang, who called themselves The Jokers. Davidson was able to document their candid manifestations of worry, energy, enthusiasm, anger, and occasional sadness. The gang seemed to exist in their own secluded world, meandering from Coney Island to diners and taxicabs, anxiously moving forward with an unknown future and unknown goals. Some of them were even thoroughly troubled: one member died from a heroin overdose a few years after Davidson left them. Not only is Davidson’s work a sincere portrayal of troubled teenagers coming of age, but it also acts as a documentation of teenage life during 1950s, exposing the emotional climate of that time period and exposing the dark side of a supposedly innocent time period.

Engineered Garments FW2009 – Tweedy Knit Vests

I think these two are the rest of the knit vests for this season. Unlike the argyle versions, these are a bit more safe to wear and would look great layered under one of the Bedford or Andover jackets. Images from nalu.co.jp.

Engineered Garments FW2009 – Cotton Twill Bedford Jackets

The cotton Bedford jackets available this season are made from a heavy twill which should hold up well against the colder winds in fall. More versions will be available in the next set of shipments to stores. Images from Dice & Dice.
