Feeling adventurous, I picked up a few seasonal beers that I usually avoid – pumpkin beers were new to me, so I had no idea on what to expect. The samples: Southern Tier Pumpking, the Elysian Night Owl and The Great Pumpkin, and the Dogfish Head Punkin Ale.

Southern Tier Pumpking. This beer is brutal, both in aroma and taste – anyone who says it’s like pumpkin pie is a liar. It get’s more drinkable if you let it sit for a few minutes after pouring it, but it was still difficult for me to finish. Serve it to the people that you don’t like.

The Elysian Night Owl. Very tasty with a good pumpkin color.

The Great Pumpkin, also from the Elysian. It tastes and looks like a stronger version of the Night Owl, and it also has more alcohol by volume. Have it with your friends.

The Dogfish Head Punkin Ale. A good well rounded beer that’s on the sweet side without tasting gimmicky. Save these for yourself.
