Lightning Bolt and Surfwear’s Return

After stagnating a bit over the past 20 years, Lightning Bolt has recently “relaunched” its famous surfwear clothing line. While it was a bit before my time, it’s hard not to know about their iconic logo which can still be seen on some beaches today.

With the current retail environment, I think the key to success this time around will be to limit distribution of their clothing to small boutiques and shops. It’s also not a bad time to try something like this, as other surfwear companies like Birdwell Britches and Katin have been doing well lately due in part to the resurgent interest in American heritage brands and increased press.

Available at Ian and Revolve Clothing (and probably a few other places too).

NYTimes Piece on the Resurgence of the American Look

Finally, a writer without his head up his ass writes an article on the resurgence of the American look without sounding like a snot.

Lately the trend has taken on a new dimension, via the Internet, with a resurgence of interest in once obscure American brands. Alongside the familiar L. L. Bean duck boots, Brooks Brothers shirts and Ray-Ban Wayfarers, there are Filson duffel bags, Gokey boots, Alden dress shoes, Gitman oxford shirts, Quoddy Trail moccasins, Wm. J. Mills canvas totes — to name but a few. Moribund brands like Southwick and Woolrich are being revived with new designs. And the old-school look has been furthered by popular American fashion labels — small houses like Thom Browne, Band of Outsiders and Benjamin Bixby along with megabrands like J. Crew and Ralph Lauren.

Thank you David Colman.  Read the whole article here: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/06/17/fashion/18codes.html (There are also some good quotes from Daiki Suzuki and André Benjamin.)

The Patagonia Micro Puff Vest

Patagonia’s micro puff vest is probably one of the most useful pieces of clothing I own.  Despite being fairly lightweight, it’s does a great job at keeping warmth in and it’s suitable to wear year-round.  Best yet is that it’s also very easy to pack down and stow away.  See more images on Patagonia’s site: http://www.patagonia.com/web/us/product/mens-micro-puff-vest-alpine?slc=en_US&sct=US&p=83996-0-763

Also on Oi Polloi’s flickr page are preview pictures for the Woolrich Woolen Mills F/W2009 collection.  I thought the drawings were more interesting than the actual pieces though. :/

More Engineered Garments FW2009 Pictures

Oipolloi.com recently uploaded some preview pictures of their Engineered Garments F/W2009 selection.  Highlights are the field shirt jackets, the cape, and norfolk jacket, and it’s good to see that the steelhead fishing vest will be returning in wool.  See more on their flickr page: http://www.flickr.com/photos/38359928@N08/sets/72157619608211484/

Natural Colored Engineer Jackets @ Odin

Engineered Garments natural (off-white) colored engineer jackets are now available at Odin.  The selvege fabric looks like a canvas or boat cloth, not really sure.  I would not agree that it’s as “versatile as a blazer or jacket”, but it’s not bad looking either.
