The latest issue of Men’s File is now available. I’ve been looking forward to this one for a few months now after finding out about the photo shoot for Nigel Cabourn’s new Antarctic Expedition collection (scans on the Cabourn team’s blog).
As usual, Self Edge is a great resource to purchase a copy from if you’re in the U.S. Otherwise, check to see if you might have a local retailer who’s carrying it.
Not belonging to another particular nationality has ever stopped me from celebrating that country’s holidays – after all, it’s just another good excuse to have a few nice drinks. Bastille Day is no exception with its timeliness in summer after our own July 4th parties, and in preparation of tonight’s activities I’ll be making several cocktails with a bottle of Lillet Rose. Recently released this last spring for the first time, the Rose brings the flavors of several different grapes together into a wonderful aperitif which can be served chilled on its own or mixed in with other drinks.
See if any local establishments are throwing a special event for today – if in Seattle, you might like to check out the Corson Building and Le Pichet.
While watching clips from the famous surf documentary Pacific Vibrations, I remembered another great one – The Endless Summer. A quick search brought me to news that it has recently been digitally remastered and is available for download in iTunes.
A couple previews of the Engineered Garments Fall/Winter 2012 collection have surfaced recently – the first through a Japanese stockist and now another through the Gap Men Press publication which showcases work for upcoming seasons. While the images are small and low quality, you can still see some new interesting details and designs.
EG fans can probably expect the full lookbook to be released online around late June-July.
Update: Honeyee now has a picture showing a new camo bedford jacket, the C-1 vest, and a western shirt.
Self Edge recently restocked a number of the Flat Head goods it carries and I took the opportunity to purchase an extra woven leather bracelet for variety’s sake. The tan version I’ve had over the last year has aged wonderfully into a richer color (compare to a picture from when I first received it) and I would expect to see similar results with my new one.
Over the next two weeks if you find yourself down in Seattle’s Pioneer Square neighborhood for lunch, you might like to stop into the temporary Hardware[Store] on Occidental Avenue – it is not a store in the traditional sense, but is instead an art installation to highlight tools both rare and common.
Run by Olson Kundig Architects, [storefront] has been holding different projects since its opening last December as a record store (and previous to the current installation, it was a mushroom farm).
Over the past several years J. Gilbert Footwear in Seattle has become a great resource for shoes and this last week marks the opening of the new men’s shop, which opened up next door to the original location on 1st Avenue – beforehand, the men’s shoes were relegated to a dark corner, but instead are now featured in a comfortably open and naturally lit space. The best part of course, is that there is now room for more awesome models from Alden, Rider Boot, and Lucchese.
Spring is slowly arriving in Seattle and my favorite store downtown has received just about all of its SS12 shipments. From Engineered Garments, there are lots of great jackets, ties, and shirts including the rare 19th century button down in white polka dot.
While Junya Watanabe’s SS12 runway show had some outlandish gear, the pieces carried at Jack Straw are much more approachable (and wearable) – my favorites from this season include a fair isle pattern rollneck sweater and round collar Mackintosh jackets in navy and green.
Very interesting navy captoe boots from Yohji Yamamoto can be found in the back area.
A selection of Dries Van Noten pieces, including several light unstructured jackets for warmer weather.
Not pictured – the Boglioli patch pocket sportcoat in a shade of blue that would overload tumblr. From what I hear, some more great lines are on the way for this next fall/winter as well.
Rin Tanaka has continued his King of Vintage series with another volume showcasing more pieces in Larry McKaughan’s collections – like the first volume, the book opens with a great section on workwear and then transitions through outdoor clothing, sportswear, and then motorcyle gear. The most interesting part however, is the last section on American military graffiti which features items that were painted, stenciled, and embroidered by servicemen.

The sixth issue of Men’s File is now available, and you can also preview the entire magazine on their website. This one is full of motorcycle related content, but you’ll also find pieces on Hitoshi Tsujimoto of The Real McCoy’s, jewelry by Larry Smith, Watanabe bicycle bags, and Goodwood Revival portraits. Also revealed – they will be publishing a book showcasing the photography from previous issues.
