Beams Japan’s Alden Factory Visit

While on mention of Horween leathers, what do I spy in this image? Many and many pairs of shoes in cigar and whiskey shell cordovan sitting in Alden’s factory. It’s part of a scan of a special edition magazine called “All About USA” put out between Popeye (a Japanese clothing magazine) and Beams (a Japanese clothing retailer).

I wonder what lucky store all of those are going to.

This next scan shows an interesting part before the soles are attached.  If you notice closely, there is in fact a large piece of metal laid on top of the cork bed which is usually referred to as a steel shank.  To loosely quote one of their salesmen, the steel shank is part of what makes an Alden shoe so special (and heavy :) ) as it helps provide support for your feet.

Horween Leather Co. Visits Wilson

FYI, Horween Leather Co. recently launched its own blog: http://horween.wordpress.com/

One their first posts was about a visit to Wilson’s factory where footballs are still manufactured and it’s worth going over to check out the other pictures. I hope the Horween guys keep up with the blogging and can showcase more manufacturers and artisans using their leathers, which I would guess are in more products than what people are aware of. Also be sure to follow them on twitter: http://twitter.com/HorweenLeather

Red Brick Soul Shoes

The Red Brick Soul shoe line from Mark McNairy is now available online for purchase at epauletshop.com in two different styles, the Fred white bucks and the Lincoln tan suede loafers.

Hopefully more will be available soon (I’m holding out for some of the blue suede chukka boots and saddle shoes).

Woolrich Woolen Mills SS2010 Preview from Pitti

I was pretty surprised by the Woolrich presentation.  A few pieces here and there would be alright to wear by themselves, but I mostly don’t care for any of this.  I miss the F/W08 and S/S09 collections already. :(

Pictures from wwd.com.

Update: Apparently there might be some of the Woolrich John Bros stuff mixed into these pictures as well, so that might explain a few of the odd looks.

Filson’s New Luggage for Fall – wtf?

I had heard Filson was working on some new luggage designs several months ago, but it wasn’t until now that I’ve been able to get any pictures of them.  Instead of “iconic”, they went for “mediocrity”.  These look like the same exact crap that you can already buy from dozens of other companies, why do we need more?

Instead of putting out stuff like this, they should concentrate on the bags and luggage they already have.  Maybe even try adding a few more colors besides shades of brown and green?

Update: The luggage line is called “Passage” and it does not look like they’re made here in the U.S.  See more on their website: http://www.filson.com/family/index.jsp?categoryId=2808323&cp=2065673&clickid=leftnav_NEW_Passage_Luggage_txt

Minoru Matsuzawa Featured in Monocle

In a recent issue of Monocle (I think it was the April or May edition), there was a short inset on several up and coming architects from around the world.  Most of the buildings featured were boring modernist homes, but the one that stood out in particular was the country house that architect Minoru Matsuzawa designed for himself and his wife.  It was the only building featured that still had a sense of both culture and craftsmanship.

Read on to see scans of the article and pictures of his home. I think this is the website for his firm as well: http://web.me.com/minorumatsuzawa/architecture/home.html

Bass Weejuns – Now Made in Maine

I was just pointed towards these Bass Weejun’s that are now being made in Maine again (click on the Jeffrey models). I can’t help but think that Bass’s owners really should have done this 2-3 years ago.

Real McCoy’s Flight Jackets from 2nd Magazine

A few scans from a recent issue of 2nd Magazine (I think it’s done by the same people who publish Lightning).  The A-2’s go for about $2k. ;_;
