The Savory Collection

goodman_wilson
There is a cool story in today’s NYTimes on the restoration of never before heard jazz recordings from the 1930’s, dubbed the “Savory Collection”:

Recorded from radio broadcasts in the late 1930s by an audio engineer named William Savory, it was known to include extended live performances by some of the most honored names in jazz — but only a handful of people had ever heard even the smallest fraction of that music, adding to its mystique.

After 70 years that wait has now ended. This year the National Jazz Museum in Harlem acquired the entire set of nearly 1,000 discs, made at the height of the swing era, and has begun digitizing recordings of inspired performances by Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman, Billie Holiday, Count Basie, Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young, Bunny Berigan, Harry James and others that had been thought to be lost forever. Some of these remarkable long-form performances simply could not be captured by the standard recording technology of the time. (Mr. Savory used a different format.) The Savory collection also contains examples of underappreciated musicians playing at peak creative levels not heard anywhere else, putting them in a new light for jazz fans and scholars.

There are some short audio samples of the original and remastered versions as well (you can still hear some noise and scratches in the tracks, but the quality is amazing compared to other recordings from the same time period). Continue reading more.

J.Crew’s New Flap-Pocket Oxfords

Now available in stores as part of their fall-rollout. The fabric is pretty soft and I first thought that there was some wool in it, but nope, all cotton. Hopefully they’ll have some more in other colors later, I could definitely go for one with blue stripes.

Going Back to a Classic

As George Peppard shows in his wardrobe in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, the classic navy blazer and grey trouser combination is perfect to use for those occasions when you do not need the formality of a suit. For me being in a very casual city like Seattle, that usually means it’s ideal for things like wedding events, special dinners out, and the upcoming company holiday parties.

Handy references from Men’s Ex:

The only trouble with it is, is that you’ll end up wanting to buy an assortment of trousers in different shades of grey… and then maybe in different types of wools…

Ivy League Jazz

miles_davis
I had forgotten about this piece on Miles Davis from a couple of years back and it was nice to find again after researching the Andover Shop a bit last month.

Sometime around 1954, jazz great Miles Davis walked into the Andover Shop, a small haberdashery in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and single-handedly turned the world of style upside down. Just as his groundbreaking album Milestones (celebrating it’s 50th anniversary next year) changed music, that afternoon in Cambridge shifted men’s fashion.

Miles emerged from the store clad head to toe in traditional “Ivy League”-style clothing, and in so doing merged two separate worlds-those of the establishment and the black jazz artist-as if fusing two dissonant notes to create a bold new harmony. The result was a crashing chord of cool that obliterated the line between square and hip, sounding a fashion fortissimo that lasted several years before fading into the silence of pop-culture obscurity.

A Corduroy Suit

Brooks Brothers is selling them in their Fitzgerald cut this season, and I might finally try it out. There would be no turning back.

A look at the New Levi’s x Filson Collection

Not too long ago, Filson went on the record to say they weren’t going to do any sort of fashion line like Woolrich Woolen Mills, but instead would be looking at adapting some of their existing pieces to the younger crowds for this fall – if the new workwear line for Levi’s is what the CEO was referring to then it’s a great start.

I was able to check it out in person today at the flagship store in Seattle and every piece is impressive and comes with the Filson guarantee. Even better, they’re not being shy on the ‘Made in the USA’ marketing.

From the small graph paper notebook included with your purchase: ‘Both Levi’s and Filson’s brands build the highest quality products for the pioneers of today. Go forth.’

As for the pieces: the all denim cruiser jacket and upland shirt are less imposing in person and fit true to size (though still roomy), the hunting cap has a quilted interior with wool ear flaps to fold down for extra warmth, and I probably would have bought the twill/denim tote if I didn’t have too many bags already. Everything is available for purchase at the Filson Seattle store and at various Levi’s locations around the U.S. – Update: It’s now up at filson.com and levi.com as well.

Barbour’s New Jackets for Fall

In addition to the To Ki To stuff, Barbour has updated its website with items in their Fall/Winter selection and there lots of great jackets to choose from this year. One absence though is the tailored waistcoat (or at least I can’t find it), hopefully they have not dropped it just yet as I need to buy another one.

Sidenote: the only thing I dislike about their recent direction is all of the various “collections”. What is the difference between the sporting collection, the classic collection, or the heritage collection? There is no distinction between any of them and the branding is confusing – they should just drop the titles and just focus on “Barbour”.
