Sam Hober Pocketsquares

Great product, great service. Sam Hober is a small business based out of Thailand and they specialize in making custom handmade ties, scarves, and pocketsquares out of some of the best silks and fabrics available – and for summer, there is a selection of Carlo Riva cotton fabrics to choose from.

The edges of the pocketsquares are hand-rolled and tightly stitched (both of which helps keep the shape of the square while folded in the breast pocket).

Shown above, squares made with the navy blue/white voile cotton and white linen/cotton. Easily the nicest I own.

Navy Suede Shoes

Navy suede has become a niche leather for summer shoes over the past few years and more stores are taking notice. While not always colorfast (warning), they’re great for pairing up with lighter trousers and sometimes faded denim.

Where to find:
Alden unlined bluchers at Leather Soul
Alden bluchers at Frans Boone, along with longwings and Tricker’s on a red brick sole
– Paul Stuart crepe sole chukka boots
Mark McNairy chukka boots from Bonobos
Mark McNairy saddle shoes with white soles at Bows+Arrows
Walk-Over and Sanders

In limited Sizes:
Tricker’s chukka boots and bluchers at the Bureau
Tricker’s wingtips at Present
Alden unlined bluchers from Tres Bien

Alden bluchers on the Plaza last, flex welt, metal eyelets.

Brooks Brothers Made-to-Measure

Online made-to-measure programs scare me but this Spring I decided to give Brooks Brothers a shot, knowing that its extra slim fit shirt model is perfect on me and that I wouldn’t have to choose anything for measurements besides my neck and sleeve size. A little over a month later, I had the shirt in my hands and I couldn’t be more pleased with how it turned out – everything was correct and most importantly, it fit the same as the regular extra slim shirts.

I’m already planning another much larger order, but I will go to my local store for the next batch to see if more fabrics are available to choose from (the main drawback to the online program is a lack of interesting fabrics). A side note: while using the online program between different computers, I noticed that I was sometimes missing options, especially for the extra slim fit type. If this happens to you clear out your browser cache and reload the page – an old version of the swf flash file is probably being stored on your computer.

Some of the options: an English spread collar.

Two button mitered cuffs, a useless but fun detail.

Every shirt comes packages in a nice box, another useless but fun detail.

Pour-over Coffee with Hario

Since picking up a pour-over coffee hobby, my kitchen is starting to look more like a chemistry lab with different types of filters, decanters, and other glass contraptions strewn about. As with most hobbies, this is just a slippery slope to more elaborate things and I suspect fancy siphon systems with beam heaters will be next in my future.

Julian Boots in Free & Easy

There is a great feature on Julian Imario of Julian Boots in both the current issue of Free & Easy and the companion Bootsman Bible. The more I see of these the more I want a pair.

Polishing with a Bone

I’ve always wondered about these polishing bones, and Will from A Suitable Wardrobe has put together a video showing one in use by a pro.

I will file this away for the day when I become fanatical about my shoes.

The Day of the Peacock

The Day of the Peacock was released last month and it’s been fun to go through. Covering the extravagant dandy styles of the 60’s-70’s, the author skips over the celebrities of the time and instead focuses on the men who were directly influencing fashion – often the tailors and couturiers themselves. Legendary figures such as Hardy Amies, Michael Fish, and Tommy Nutter are all included.
