Saphir Rénovateur

Part of my recent weekend was spent cleaning my spring footwear with Saphir Rénovateur, the magical leather conditioner that is seen as one of the best shoe products in the world. Apply with a small brush and then finish with a couple coats of their wax or creme – when done, you can end up with a high gloss shine.

Saphir products can now be found in a number of high end shoe stores like Leather Soul and Leffot as well as online at ASW. If you’re in Seattle, J. Gilbert Footwear also has a small selection.

Pairing Up Barbour Jackets

From the current winter issue of Men’s Precious. I like the emphasis on complementary tones with small pops of color, my favorite being the unexpected polka dot scarf paired with International jacket.

On a related note, Barbour has updated its website for the SS11 collection, though I don’t think there is anything too noteworthy aside from the nylon International jackets.

Pitti Uomo News Roundup

ts_s_fw11
* Bruce Pask again has an excellent writeup for the NYTimes on most of the brands I was interested in. Likewise, Khabi on Fashion Buyer UK has also shared his thoughts on what was shown.

* Men’s Mentore had some great coverage with lots of pictures. Oddly the only highlight for me are those floral print squares from Hill-Side.

* Fashionising has published a list of observations they made about some of the lines and on the show in general.

* Get ready for some small price hikes. WWD also had an article on this:

Eric Jennings, vice president and fashion director of men’s for Saks Fifth Avenue, said that after holding off for a couple of seasons due to the recession, men want to replace holes in their wardrobe, whether for suits or sportswear. Among the main challenges for the sector, however, are the price hikes instituted by vendors following steep increases on raw materials and piece goods, many of which have risen by up to 30 percent. “I think the vendors are very cognizant of [the situation] and will partner with us, and we won’t get sticker shock this season, but it’s a huge factor,” he said.

* Nigel Cabourn continues to do his thing. The Brady bags look great, but the Eddie Baeur collection feels off in that none of the pieces look like anything Eddie Baeur has ever made (not in a good way). On mention of which, when is Eddie Baeur going to get its act together and come out with a line based on its archival pieces?

* Très Bien Shop has posted pictures of their trip to their flickr account. Lots of previews of favorite brands are shown.

* In continuing the race to market his name into the ground, Barbour premiered its new Steve McQueen collection. Like the previously branded clothing line which nobody bought, some elements of it are pretty naff. Yes, he’s an icon, but screenprinting his image on the inside of your riding jacket is going a bit too far.

Men’s File – Issue 3

Men’s File issue 4 is just now getting sent out to stores, but it wasn’t until recently that I was able to get a copy of issue 3 from a restock at Self Edge (order one now while you still can). Along with the regular doses of cars, motorcycles, and women, this issue has some wonderfully shot picture spreads under themes of vintage mountaineering, tweed runs, and bicycling.

45rpm Spring 2011 Lookbook

Now available online. There’s not too much shown for the menswear this season, but I think it’s one my favorite presentations so far. I hope some of those hats will be available for sale as well.

J.Crew’s Bandanas

Hidden away in the Crewcuts section on jcrew.com are some great and affordable bandanas. They’re made in India, and are fairly soft in comparison to many of my other handkerchiefs. Only time will tell how the fabric holds up in the long run though.

There are also lots of other cool stuff available including Andrew Zuckerman’s Creature book, Caran d’Ache crayons, and a Schleich T-Rex toy.

Tweed in the Countryside

Engineered Garments Spring/Summer 2011 Lookbook

The folks at Nepenthes have just uploaded the lookbook for the Engineered Garments Spring/Summer 2011 collection, go check it out. In some ways it feels like a developed continuation of the SS09 collection with a focus on subtle palettes.

Highlights for me include the explorer jacket in poplin, the trench in cotton twill, and the floral print ghurka shorts. I’m also looking forward to seeing more of the shirts over the next few weeks after shipments make their way out to stores.

Snow Landscapes by Andrew Wyeth

“I prefer winter and fall, when you feel the bone structure of the landscape – the loneliness of it, the dead feeling of winter. Something waits beneath it, the whole story doesn’t show.” – Andrew Wyeth

Engineered Garments SS2011 First Deliveries

The first deliveries of the Engineered Garments SS11 collection are now getting to stores in Japan and one of the new designs is the field shirt which has two large inverted pleat pockets – a feature rooted in both older military and hunting gear, depending on where you look.

I would expect that stores in the U.S. will begin to receive deliveries around January, so check in with your local stockist to see what they might have ordered. The full look book should show up online around then as well.

Monday update! It looks like the popular CPO shirts will be available in lightweight poplin fabrics. These will be great for warm weather.
