Ivy League Jazz

miles_davis
I had forgotten about this piece on Miles Davis from a couple of years back and it was nice to find again after researching the Andover Shop a bit last month.

Sometime around 1954, jazz great Miles Davis walked into the Andover Shop, a small haberdashery in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and single-handedly turned the world of style upside down. Just as his groundbreaking album Milestones (celebrating it’s 50th anniversary next year) changed music, that afternoon in Cambridge shifted men’s fashion.

Miles emerged from the store clad head to toe in traditional “Ivy League”-style clothing, and in so doing merged two separate worlds-those of the establishment and the black jazz artist-as if fusing two dissonant notes to create a bold new harmony. The result was a crashing chord of cool that obliterated the line between square and hip, sounding a fashion fortissimo that lasted several years before fading into the silence of pop-culture obscurity.

A Corduroy Suit

Brooks Brothers is selling them in their Fitzgerald cut this season, and I might finally try it out. There would be no turning back.

A look at the New Levi’s x Filson Collection

Not too long ago, Filson went on the record to say they weren’t going to do any sort of fashion line like Woolrich Woolen Mills, but instead would be looking at adapting some of their existing pieces to the younger crowds for this fall – if the new workwear line for Levi’s is what the CEO was referring to then it’s a great start.

I was able to check it out in person today at the flagship store in Seattle and every piece is impressive and comes with the Filson guarantee. Even better, they’re not being shy on the ‘Made in the USA’ marketing.

From the small graph paper notebook included with your purchase: ‘Both Levi’s and Filson’s brands build the highest quality products for the pioneers of today. Go forth.’

As for the pieces: the all denim cruiser jacket and upland shirt are less imposing in person and fit true to size (though still roomy), the hunting cap has a quilted interior with wool ear flaps to fold down for extra warmth, and I probably would have bought the twill/denim tote if I didn’t have too many bags already. Everything is available for purchase at the Filson Seattle store and at various Levi’s locations around the U.S. – Update: It’s now up at filson.com and levi.com as well.

Barbour’s New Jackets for Fall

In addition to the To Ki To stuff, Barbour has updated its website with items in their Fall/Winter selection and there lots of great jackets to choose from this year. One absence though is the tailored waistcoat (or at least I can’t find it), hopefully they have not dropped it just yet as I need to buy another one.

Sidenote: the only thing I dislike about their recent direction is all of the various “collections”. What is the difference between the sporting collection, the classic collection, or the heritage collection? There is no distinction between any of them and the branding is confusing – they should just drop the titles and just focus on “Barbour”.

Going to Battle

I’ve been infatuated with these stripes lately.

A Love Affair with Western Shirts

Years ago, some of you might remember that writer Amanda Brooks had an excellent blog going for Men’s Vogue called “In Her Eyes” where she smartly discussed various clothing topics and inspirations (the blog of course is now lost forever). One of her most memorable posts that I’ll never forget was on western shirts – the gist of it was that she was surprised that many of the men she knew always had some western shirts tucked away in the back of the closets and for them they were like a guilty pleasure. And I’m the exact same way.

I now have way too many, and I hardly ever wear them. I love everything about them though; the pockets, the yokes, the snap buttons, the unfinished hems. By no means are they sharp looking shirts, but they are more fun to wear than any other shirts I have.

Filson’s Osaka Store

The news of the Levi’s workwear line by Filson led me their Japanese distributor’s website this evening, where I noticed that they’re now showing a bit more of the Filson Italy line along with some great pictures of the new Osaka store (conveniently located above a Champion sweatshirt store). I like that the interior design is completely opposite of the approach that the American stores take.

Hummingbird’s Hill

I just came across part of a fun ad for a combo clothing store/American style diner in Tokyo called Hummingbird’s Hill – the denim on the right makes me want to get back into painting with oils and acrylics.

Engineered Garments Ashfield Jacket

The safari inspired Ashfield jacket is back in the Engineered Garments FW10 collection (previously the model was exclusive to BEAMS) and it will be available in a few different fabric materials. Context and the Inventory Stockroom are so far the only stockists that I know of who will carry it this season. Images from S2W8’s store blog.
