Alden Tanker Boots for Context

Context is now carrying custom tanker boots from Alden.  What makes these different from other versions is the pull tab on each, and that these are made from a special oiled calfskin instead of shell cordovan.  It’s too bad for me that these were made on the Barrie last (which does not fit me well).  See more pictures here: http://www.contextclothing.com/item.php?id=1006

Engineered Garments SS2010 Preview from Pitti

Also on Tres Bien’s flickr page is a couple shots of Engineered Garments S/S2010 display.  In the second photo, the guy looks like he is wearing a pair of the ts(s) blue brick sole wingtips.

There’s also another picture of the booth shown on nepenthes.co.jp in Daiki Suzuki’s journal.

Yuketen SS2010 Preview from Pitti

Tres Bien has posted some pictures from Pitti on their flickr page: http://www.flickr.com/photos/tresbienshop/

Here’s one of Yuketen’s display for their S/S2010 selection.  The colored chukka’s look great in particular.

Woolrich Woolen Mills FW2009 Lookbook Pictures

The Woolrich Woolen Mills website was recently updated with pictures of the lookbook that they send around to retailers.  I’m still not impressed with this season’s collection, but at least the pictures are better this time.

Also don’t forget that Oi Polloi put up some pictures of their’s as well: http://mistercrew.com/blog/2009/06/15/woolrich-woolen-mills-fw2009-pictures/

J.Crew MacAlister Boots

A short review – they’re average.

A slightly longer review – The J.Crew MacAlister boots fit and look great.  The crepe soles have so far been holding up well after lots of wear, and I haven’t had any production issues that I’ve heard about from others (yet).  My only problem with these is that they’re not comfortable to walk in if you have to go further than a city block.  If I had to choose again, I’d just stick with Clark’s desert boots or instead go with a more expensive pair from Grenson or Alfred Sargent.

Fun related fact (or myth) – Soldiers returning from North Africa in WW2 that frequented the shadier parts of town were referred to as “brothel creepers” because of the desert boots they were still wearing.  Teddy Boy and Rockabilly kids would later take these and make them parts of their regular uniforms.

Lightning Bolt and Surfwear’s Return

After stagnating a bit over the past 20 years, Lightning Bolt has recently “relaunched” its famous surfwear clothing line. While it was a bit before my time, it’s hard not to know about their iconic logo which can still be seen on some beaches today.

With the current retail environment, I think the key to success this time around will be to limit distribution of their clothing to small boutiques and shops. It’s also not a bad time to try something like this, as other surfwear companies like Birdwell Britches and Katin have been doing well lately due in part to the resurgent interest in American heritage brands and increased press.

Available at Ian and Revolve Clothing (and probably a few other places too).

NYTimes Piece on the Resurgence of the American Look

Finally, a writer without his head up his ass writes an article on the resurgence of the American look without sounding like a snot.

Lately the trend has taken on a new dimension, via the Internet, with a resurgence of interest in once obscure American brands. Alongside the familiar L. L. Bean duck boots, Brooks Brothers shirts and Ray-Ban Wayfarers, there are Filson duffel bags, Gokey boots, Alden dress shoes, Gitman oxford shirts, Quoddy Trail moccasins, Wm. J. Mills canvas totes — to name but a few. Moribund brands like Southwick and Woolrich are being revived with new designs. And the old-school look has been furthered by popular American fashion labels — small houses like Thom Browne, Band of Outsiders and Benjamin Bixby along with megabrands like J. Crew and Ralph Lauren.

Thank you David Colman.  Read the whole article here: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/06/17/fashion/18codes.html (There are also some good quotes from Daiki Suzuki and André Benjamin.)

The Patagonia Micro Puff Vest

Patagonia’s micro puff vest is probably one of the most useful pieces of clothing I own.  Despite being fairly lightweight, it’s does a great job at keeping warmth in and it’s suitable to wear year-round.  Best yet is that it’s also very easy to pack down and stow away.  See more images on Patagonia’s site: http://www.patagonia.com/web/us/product/mens-micro-puff-vest-alpine?slc=en_US&sct=US&p=83996-0-763
